SSLC
What is the SSLC?
The Staff-Student Liaison Committee (SSLC) is our main source of feedback from students to staff in the Department of Information Systems. The committee comprises:
- student representatives from each subject
- several staff
- the Head of Department
The aim of the committee is to identify what is going well, and what needs improving, within the department. Issues of personal teaching style are best discussed between student and lecturer directly, but are addressed by this committee when consensus can't be reached. Minutes of the meetings are recorded and linked to this Website.
What do the student representatives do?
Your role as SSLC rep is to collect information from other students in their subject about the progress of their subject. This should happen continuously during the semester (at least fortnightly), with the aim of keeping the lecturer up-to-date on issues than can readily be resolved. This information can be collected in various ways: survey, email, direct conversations with individuals, or short discussions with the whole class. Some subject will set up an SSLC Web forum for you to post issues that you have raised with the lecturer, and for you to post the lecturer's response for all to see.
Twice each semester all the SSLC representatives meet with staff from each year level to discuss issues of common interest. It is here that your particular knowledge of the issues currently important to other students is valuable. We discuss them and hopefully find ways to tackle any problems that arise.
We regard the role of SSLC representative as a very important one - not just a feather in your cap for your CV! Hence we have a SSLC Representative Charter for you to sign if you are willing to undertake this role.
When does the SSLC meet?
The Staff-Student Liaison Committee meets twice per semester in room 4.04 at the Department of Information Systems, level 4, ICT Building. Light refreshments are served.

How do I become a student representative?
The subject coordinator in each subject will organise reps at the start of each semester. This might simply be by volunteers or a simple vote may be necessary. Please consider volunteering - not only do you get to meet other students from other subjects and year levels, but you also find out a lot more about your course and how the department runs. A worthwhile experience!
