Laptops that have been purchased using Departmental funds, are considered to be Department Assets.
Departmental assets will be labelled with a Department of Information Systems barcode.
Users with Departmental Laptops, are granted access to all network resources. This includes network drives, printing and the Internet.
In order to connect your Departmental Laptop to the network, you will need to submit a Web Helpdesk ticket containing the following information:
- Ethernet Adapter Address (for more details click here)
- Laptop Model Details (E.g. Toshiba Tecra S1)
- Departmental Barcode (E.g. Department of Information Systems 0002953)
- Spare Office Ethernet Port (E.g. Zone: D, P/Panel: B, Jack: 16)
Personal Laptop (SPIN Network)
Laptops that have been purchased using personal funds, are not considered to be Departmental Assets.
Users with Personal Laptops, are connected to the SPIN network only. This SPIN network provides access to the Internet, and to the Department Intranet.
Authorisation
In order to connect to the SPIN Network, you must first complete an authorisation form. This form will be provided to you, after network access is requested click here.
Rules & Regulations
Users must follow all designated rules and regulations when using the SPIN Network click here.
If users do not follow these rules, they may lose their network access, or be forced to pay for excessive downloads.
There are two ways to connect your laptop to the SPIN network:
New Users
Request access to the SPIN Network when submitting application forms to Administration, with the following details:
- Ethernet Adapter Address (for more details click here)
- Laptop Model Details (E.g. Toshiba Tecra S1)
Existing Users
In order to connect your laptop to the SPIN network, you will need to submit a Web Helpdesk ticket, containing the following information:
- Ethernet Adapter Address (for more details click here)
- Laptop Model Details (E.g. Toshiba Tecra S1)
- Spare Office Ethernet Port (E.g. Zone: D, P/Panel: B, Jack: 16)
SPIN Network Connection
Tech Services staff will assist you to connect to the SPIN Network in the first instance.

This is a Centrally Managed System, controlled and supported by Information Services only.

Getting Connected

Frequently Asked Questions
SPIN Network Connection
In order to verify your network connection, please complete the following steps.
- Check the Ethernet Cable is securely connected to your laptop, and at the wall
- Check your laptop is getting a valid IP address
- Click Start
- Select Run
- Type cmd
- Click OK
- Type ipconfig/all and Press Enter
- Ensure your IP address appears as 172.31.2.xxx
- Check your Proxy Settings in Internet Explorer
- Open Internet Explorer
- Click the Tools menu
- Select Internet Options
- Click the Connections tab
- Click the LAN Settings button
- Deselect both options in the Automatic Configuration section
- Select both options in the Proxy Server section
- Enter in proxy.dis.unimelb.edu.au in the Address field
- Enter in 3128 into the Port field
- If you still cannot access the Internet after completing the above steps, please log a Web Helpdesk ticket click here
Ethernet Connection (Non SPIN)
In order to verify your network connection, please complete the following steps.
- Check the Ethernet Cable is securely connected to your laptop and at the wall
- Check your laptop is getting a valid IP address
- Click Start
- Select Run
- Type cmd
- Click OK
- Type ipconfig/all and Press Enter
- Ensure your IP address appears as 128.250.191.xxx
- Check your Proxy Settings in Internet Explorer
- Open Internet Explorer
- Click the Tools menu
- Select Internet Options
- Click the Connections tab
- Click the LAN Settings button
- Select both options in the Automatic Configuration section
- Deselect both options in the Proxy Server section
- Type in http://www.unimelb.edu.au/cgi-bin/proxy.pac in the Address field
- If you still cannot access the Internet after completing the above steps, please log a Web Helpdesk ticket click here
Wireless Connection
In order to verify your network connection, please complete the following steps.
- Ensure you have an active Central University Account
- Check that you have an active Wireless Connection
- Click Start
- Select Settings
- Double-Click Network Connections
- Right click on your Wireless Ethernet Adapter
- Select Status
- Ensure the Status is Connected
- Check your Proxy Settings in Internet Explorer
- Open Internet Explorer
- Click the Tools menu
- Select Internet Options
- Click the Connections tab
- Click the LAN Settings button
- Select both options in the Automatic Configuration section
- Deselect both options in the Proxy Server section
- Enter in http://www.unimelb.edu.au/cgi-bin/proxy.pac in the Address field
OR - Deselect both options in the Automatic Configuration section
- Select both options in the Proxy Server section
- Enter in wwwproxy.unimelb.edu.au in the Address field
- Enter in 8000 into the Port field

I cannot print on the SPIN Network

Configure SPIN Network Proxy Settings
- Open Internet Explorer
- Click the Tools menu
- Select Internet Options
- Click the Connections tab
- Click the LAN Settings button
- Deselect both options in the Automatic Configuration section
- Select both options in the Proxy Server section
- Enter in proxy.dis.unimelb.edu.au in the Address field
- Enter in 3128 into the Port field
- Click OK

- Open Internet Explorer
- Click the Tools menu
- Select Internet Options
- Click the Connections tab
- Click the LAN Settings button
- Select both options in the Automatic Configuration section
- Deselect both options in the Proxy Server section
- Enter in http://www.unimelb.edu.au/cgi-bin/proxy.pac in the Address field
- Click OK
Connect my laptop to the network
After you have requested laptop access by logging a Web Helpdesk ticket, Tech Services will provide an IP address for your laptop.
Please complete the steps below to connect your laptop to the network:
- Connect a network cable from your laptop to the ethernet port at the wall
- Configure your laptop to DHCP
- Click Start
- Select Settings
- Double-Click Network Connections
- Right click on your Ethernet Adapter
- Select Properties
- Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Click Properties
- Click Advanced and ensure DHCP Enabled is displayed
- Click OK > Click OK > Click Close
- Ensure you are getting an IP address
- Click Start
- Select Run
- Type cmd
- Click OK
- Type ipconfig/release and Press Enter
- Type ipconfig/renew and Press Enter
- Ensure your IP address appears as 172.31.2.xxx (SPIN Network) or 128.250.191.xxx (Departmental)
