Entry Requirements for the MIS
The following are the most common entry pathways into the three programs of the MIS degree. Selection is a competitive process, and meeting the entry requirements does not guarantee entry into a program.
200 point MIS (full time study: four semesters, two years)
- An undergraduate degree in any discipline with at least H3 (65%) average in the final year of study or equivalent.
Note: This degree is for students without work experience. Since students commence the MIS with varied backgrounds, the first 50 points (one semester equivalent) of subjects are chosen to fill in gaps in knowledge from their prior course of study.
150 point MIS (full-time study: three semesters, 18 months)
- An undergraduate degree in any discipline with at least H3 (65%) average in the final year of study and at least one year documented relevant work experience; or
- A Graduate Certificate in Information Systems with at least H3 (65%) average in the Graduate Certificate or equivalent.
Note on Work Experience for 150pt MIS: Work experience should include active involvement in one or more of the analysis, development, implementation, management or maintenance of IT-based systems or ICT supporting business processes, or teaching about information systems. In your application, you must include documentary evidence of your work experience (for example a letter from your employer) which confirms the nature of the work, its duration, its full-time or part-time status and your position or role.
100 point MIS (full-time study: two semesters, one year)
- A four-year Honours degree in Information Systems with at least H3 (65%) average in the final year of study or equivalent; or
- An undergraduate degree in Information Systems with at least H3 (65%) average in the final year of study or equivalent and two years documented relevant work experience; or
- An undergraduate degree in any discipline, one year documented relevant work experience and the Postgraduate Certificate in Information Systems with at least H3 (65%) average or equivalent; or
- An undergraduate degree in any discipline and the Postgraduate Diploma in Information Systems with at least H3 (65%) average or equivalent.
Note on Information Systems degree for 100pt MIS: We require that applicants have a prior academic background of a Bachelor of Information Systems or equivalent degree. An equivalent degree usually includes approximately 60% of subjects in areas such as programming, databases, systems analysis, organisational processes, electronic commerce, project management and project implementation. There is much variation in the range of topics offered by institutions, and applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis to determine if degrees have sufficient Information Systems content.
Note on Work Experience for 100pt MIS: Work experience should include active involvement in one or more of the analysis, development, implementation, management or maintenance of IT-based systems or ICT supporting business processes, or teaching about information systems. In your application, you must include documentary evidence of your work experience (for example a letter from your employer) which confirms the nature of the work, its duration, its full-time or part-time status and your position or role.
