The Master of Information Systems (MIS)
The Master of Information Systems (MIS) is the University of Melbourne's premier degree for practitioners and consultants in digital business: Information Technology managers who support, manage and change business processes through information and communications technology (ICT) and information systems. The Master of Information Systems is both a mid-career and start-of-career professional degree for graduates of any undergraduate degree.
The MIS curriculum was designed in consultation with leading IT decision-makers across a range of companies and Government, making the Master of Information Systems and pathway programs the most industry-relevant graduate Information Technology programs in Australia.

Learning outcomes
While many students focus on the professional Information Systems knowledge and skills derived from studying the MIS, the development of transferable skills is of equal importance in developing Information Technology leaders. This is an intrinsic part of the MIS learning experience. Such skills include:
- solving business and IT problems
- critical analysis and research
- collaboration and effective team participation
- time and project management
- application of models, frameworks and management theory with consideration to impacts and outcomes
- development of presentation and oral communication
It is these transferable skills which allow students to apply their newly-learnt professional skills with confidence in the business world, often leading to career progression.
The class experience
Master of Information Systems class sizes are deliberately kept small and are highly interactive. Many classes involve industry leaders as guest lecturers and our teaching is practical and focused on the needs of working professionals.
Study commitment
Many classes take place between 5.30 and 8.30 pm Monday to Thursday. Some classes are offered on Saturday, or semi-intensively for blocks of 2 or 3 days over the semester.
A full-time student normally studies four subjects per semester spending three hours per week per subject in formal classes and a further six hours per subject in private study or group work.
A part-time student should expect to spend three hours a week per subject in class, about thirty-six hours of class time in total – this is about six hours per week for the standard part-time load of two subjects. In addition six hours a week per subject is normally spent in private study or group work.
