Summer Studentships in Information Systems
The Department of Information Systems will offer a limited number of summer studentships for students to work with researchers over the 2007-08 summer period (after exams to the beginning of first semester 2008). Studentships typically involve 8 weeks of full-time work in the Department. Remuneration of $250.00 per week may be offered for some studentships.
Applications are invited from all IS students who are completing their degrees in 2007 or sem 1 2008 and who have applied, or intend applying, for the BIS(Honours) program in 2008. Benefits include:
- The opportunity to experience research in an area actively pursued by DIS
- An opportunity to become familiar with some aspects of the Department's research efforts, and research work over what can be a very productive period of the year for researchers.
- An attractive pathway into honours in particular, and research, in general.
Successful studentship applicants will be selected on the basis of academic merit, research potential, and alignment with DIS research interests.
Below is a list of potential supervisors and topics for summer studentships in 2007/08. Please speak to the supervisors for further information.

We propose for a student to conduct a user-based usability evaluation of the Speclad environment. This environment is used to help students understand how to build a UML class diagram. This project will provide recommendations, and start implementing a few of them, on both the Speclad Eclipse plugin and its associated website (http://speclad.org), which include a Flash application.
The student would ideally have completed successfully both the Mutli-Media and HCI subjects. This project will lead to Honours work if the student is interested. |

The Kubadji Project http://www.kubadji.org/ is a funded project looking at developing technologies to provide personalised and dynamically adapted information to assist users acting in diverse, information rich, physical environments. The project is a research collaboration between the University of Melbourne, Monash University, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Museum Victoria. Several student projects are available - see the "prospective Projects" link on the above site. |

Embedding technology in the environment: This study will develop advanced knowledge of how urban neighbourhood communities can be assisted to grow in healthy ways by the use of new media and ICTs. By careful attention to cultural and social assets in the community, innovations will be engendered which enhance economic and social development. This will lead to greater social inclusion, fair access to and smart use of information and services, urban sustainability and healthier local economies. Understanding the opportunities afforded by digital augmentation of social networks will help Australians negotiate the complex web of daily choices, access a greater social safety net and participate in the socio cultural and socio economic life of their neighbourhood and city. |

Alternatively you may approach a potential supervisor from the academic staff in the Department, with your own research topic idea. For more information about the Department of Information Systems research areas go to the Research index.
When approaching a staff member, give them an idea of the general areas of your interest, the dates you are available to work, and your results so far. Once you have found a topic and potential supervisor, and negotiated some key elements of a possible project, then make a formal application.
Application Process
You must speak with your potential supervisor/s before submitting an application.
Send your application to Karen Mecoles, c/o Department of Information Systems. It should include:
- A copy of current academic transcript or statement of results
- A full curriculum vitae
- Names of two academic staff as referees
- On the basis of discussions with a willing supervisor, a brief written proposal that outlines: a proposed title of the project, proposed research activities to be conducted, name of academic staff member who has agreed in principle to supervise your work; a timeline for the proposed research.
Closing date: 5pm, Wednesday 7th of November (late applications may be considered). Further Questions? Contact Karen Mecoles Tel: + 61 3 8344 1510.
Please note, the application process is competitive. You are only guaranteed a place in the studentship program after an offer has been made.
