The Learning Environment

Integrates leading-edge thinking with practical know-how

The University of Melbourne is well known for its research strengths and is has been listed as the top University in Australia for Technology, according to The UK's Times Higher Education Supplement 2007. In the IS area this research is often intensely practical, involving case studies and field observation. The postgraduate IS courses build on these strengths by combining cutting edge course material with good practitioner support.

Associate Professor Rens Scheepers teaches at MIS level. He came to academia following a successful career in industry where he managed marketing and business systems in a large corporate environment. He serves as Regional Editor (Asia Pacific) for the Journal of Information Technology, a prominent international journal that addresses managerial aspects of IT.

Many of the lecturers are also consultants in industry or have come from industry backgrounds. In adddition, industry guest lecturers are frequently invited to speak at lectures. Past guests have included such leading figures as Evan Thornley, the founder of LookSmart, and the CIOs of leading financial and manufacturing institutions.

Courses designed specifically for post-graduates

The course content is truly designed for postgraduates, and the classes only have postgraduate students in them. We don't renumber undergraduate courses or mix classes with undergraduates

The teaching is based on campus - with supporting material on-line. We believe in the direct contact and stimulation of a class environment. To ensure a good learning experience the classes are in a seminar and workshop style with between 15 and 30 students in a class. The class times are practitioner-friendly - with a mix of evening and weekend classes, held at the Parkville campus close to the CBD

Students have access to excellent facilities with postgraduate only labs, study and project rooms and dial-in access to university services. For more information see Facilities and Services.

Student experience enriches the exchange of knowledge

All courses require a mix of independent learning, group work and class participation. Many students have work experiences that they are invited to share and the courses have a diverse international participant group.

Flexibility and individual attention ensure courses meet your needs

The course is generally flexible with wide subject choice within the Information Systems subjects and through relevant electives included in the course.

The academic coordinator and others in the team provide course and career advice both when you start the course and as needed throughout the program.

An opportunity

The courses are an opportunity:

  • to build skills, knowledge and new experiences
  • to explore, debate and test ideas
  • to link into a network of colleagues beyond the workplace
  • for personal and professional development

Learning outcomes depend on you and typically include confidence in new skills, new knowledge & in yourself.

In short these courses are the ultimate sandpit - a supportive and safe environment for you to learn and to try out new ideas
