Entry Requirements (Subject to University approval)


Entry Requirements for the MIS


The following are the most common entry pathways into the 3 versions of the MIS degree.

200 point MIS (four semesters, two years)

  • any undergraduate degree with at least a University of Melbourne  H3  (65%) average or equivalent.  This degree is for students without work experience.  Since students commence the MIS with varied backgrounds, the first 50 points (one semester) of subjects are chosen to fill in gaps in knowledge from their prior course of study.
150 point MIS (three semesters, 18 months)
  • any undergraduate degree  with at least University of Melbourne  H3  (65%) average or equivalent and one year documented relevant work experience; or

  • any undergraduate degree and the Postgraduate Certificate in Information Systems (or equivalent) with at least University of Melbourne  H3  (65%) average in the Postgraduate Certificate, or equivalent; or

  • Note: It is important that the work experience include active involvement in one or more of the analysis, development, implementation, management or maintenance of IT-based systems or ICT supporting business processes, or teaching about information systems. It is insufficient to have worked for one year as a user of information systems in a business role.

100 point MIS (two semesters, one year)

  • a four-year Honours degree in Information Systems with at least University of Melbourne  H3  (65%) average or equivalent. This degree is for students who have already completed 50 points of MIS subjects as part of their Honours degree; or

  • an undergraduate degree in Information Systems with at least University of Melbourne  H3  (65%) average or equivalent and three years documented relevant work experience.

Explanation of terms For Information Systems degree we require that applicants have a prior academic background of a Bachelor of Information Systems or relevant degree. An equivalent degree usually includes approximately 60% of subjects in areas such as programming, databases, systems analysis, organisational processes, electronic commerce,  project management and project implementation. There is much variation in the range of topics offered by institutions, and applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis to determine if degrees have sufficient information systems content.

Selection is a competitive process, and meeting the entry requirements does not guarantee entry into a course. Prerequisites may be waived at the discretion of the Department.

Entry Requirements for Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma in IS



Applications are invited from future students who:
  • have completed any undergraduate degree with an average of at least Melbourne University H3 (65%) or equivalent and one year of documented relevant work experience. .

English Language Requirements

All applicants must meet the University's English language requirements. The most common requirements for international students are TOEFL 577 + TWE 4.5, Computer TOEFL 233 + 4.5 essay rating, or IELTS 6.5 (written 6.0).
