Careers and Industry

How can the MIS further my career?

Information Systems at Melbourne is committed to developing the IT leaders of tomorrow. Our graduates occupy top positions in high-profile companies such as Oracle, Qantas, National Australia Bank, Ernst & Young, Telstra, Deutsche Bank, IBM, ANZ, Westpac and HP, as well as small business and community organisations. Other industries include fashion and design, human rights organisations and manufacturing.

You can expect to get a good start to your career if you are a graduate or an opportunity for promotion if you are currently in industry. Some examples are shown in the diagram.

Examples of career moves following the MIS include:

  • s/w developer or team leader > systems/business analyst, IS project manager
  • IT support team or network architect > support, vendor, network, or IT manager

A few of our students also eventually take up research, aiming for an academic career.

Long lasting benefits

Information Technology will continue to force its way into new applications and devices changing the way people interact, communicate and live their lives. An increasing number of IS professionals will be needed in the next 3-5 years. The Victorian government is already planning for growth.*

The IS skills taught at the University of Melbourne are not those that are being outsourced. This is due to the fact that we teach higher level skills that prepare graduates for consultancy, management and project implementation roles which are difficult to outsource internationally.

Mark Dale specializes in IS strategy and planning with particular reference to Enterprise systems and also Data Warehousing in the financial services industry.  He has consulted to national and international companies in the areas of Data Warehouse strategy and operational requirements.  Currently, Mark is assisting a client in understanding their resource requirements for enterprise financial systems and Data Warehouse development after a number of significant acquisitions.  Mark teaches Enterprise Architecture and E-Business Applications.

The competencies acquired in our degrees enable graduates to work anywhere in the world. Employers, particularly those from multinational companies, value graduates with this global perspective.

The MIS is accredited by the Australian Computer Society at the professional level.
