Course Overview

The Postgraduate Certificate in Information Systems is a one semester full-time certificate that is suitable for students who want to update their knowledge of contemporary issues in information systems. The Postgraduate Certificate in Information Systems provides an advanced course of study for students who want to understand information systems from a technological perspective as well as the organisational contexts in which these systems are used to create value.

In many cases, a person contemplating a Postgraduate Certificate may have a particular area of interest that they wish to update in their knowledge, in a more systematic and formal way than is possible with normal 'on the job' training and short courses.

Course Objectives and Structure

The Postgraduate Certificate in Information Systems is designed to:

  • provide a focused course of study in information systems;
  • enable the acquisition of knowledge about contemporary issues in information systems; and
  • encourage the development of the abilities to think critically and independently.
A Postgraduate Certificate provides a vehicle for provision of a formal University of Melbourne course to commercial and government organisations that have specific training requirements. It also provides an exit point for Postgraduate Diploma and Master students who decide not to continue with the course after successfully completing four subjects.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Information Systems comprises 50 points of information systems subjects, of which up to 12.5 points may be third-year level. The balance of points must come from fourth-year level or postgraduate subjects. It may be completed in one semester full-time or on a part-time basis and provides a focused, formal course for students with specific requirements.
