MIS student's Sign Language Animator wins pitching prizeOctober 2010
IdeaPitch challenges young entrepreneurs to pitch their business ideas to peers and investors where they must demonstrate the feasibility and profitabilty of their business. Vibushan's winning pitch was for his T.E.S.L.A (The Sign language Animator) project. T.E.S.L.A is a semantic translator that translates English to sign language and animates it using a 3D model for the benefit of the deaf. Whilst it is currently in prototype stage, he says that it has been implemented for personal use to learn sign language and in movies to provide subtitles. "The deployment opportunities are huge even though it addresses a niche market. It can be used in public places like railway stations, post offices, banks, movie theatres. The final aim would port this to mobile phones." "Why can't a deaf person go to movie theatres or even watch a movie at home? In reality, the question to ask is, are they the ones who should adapt and adjust, or should those of us with no disabilities? It was this question that made me take up the project." Vibushan's prize includes a consult with a venture capital firm and two tickets to the "Knowledge Cities World Technology Summit", which will be held in Melbourne in November.
